Renewal Waivers for Licensed Dentists on Active Duty in the Military
Per Business and Professions Code (BPC) section 114.3, most Department of Consumer Affairs boards and bureaus are required to waive renewal requirements for members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are on active duty. Renewal requirements that may be waived include renewal fees, continuing education requirements, and other requirements as determined by the Board.
How to Qualify for a Renewal Waiver
To qualify for a waiver, you must meet the following two requirements:
- Possess a current and valid Dentist License to practice in California.
- Provide written documentation, such as military orders, substantiating your active duty status.
Active duty status refers to full-time duty in the active military service of the United States in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Renewal requirements are only waived while you are on active duty. You must notify the Board of receipt of a notice of discharge date within 60 days of receiving the notice. [BPC § 114.3(e).]
How to Apply for a Renewal Waiver
You can request a waiver online using the BreEZe system at www.BreEZe.ca.gov. Select the waiver application in the drop-down menu under the Manage your License Information section and attach a copy of your military orders when prompted. You can also request a waiver by emailing DentalBoard@dca.ca.gov.
Private Practice Limitations
Licensed dentists who receive a renewal waiver may not practice privately (i.e., engage in a dental practice not affiliated with military orders) unless other requirements are met. If you seek to practice privately, you must maintain a current license in good standing and complete all renewal requirements, even those waived under the renewal waiver.
Practice Under Military Service
Licensed dentists who receive a renewal waiver and continue to practice under military service may practice under the waiver as “Military Active.”
NOTE: The U.S. Armed Forces may view “Military Active” status as a restricted license and require completion of all renewal requirements before allowing practice.
